New meetings facilities in South Africa

conferencing South African Tourism announce the latest developments in their meetings facilities and experiences for business travelers. 

A conference centre with seating for thirty-two delegates has opened at Falaza Game Park and Spa outside Hluhluwe in Zululand. It’s a scenic three hours by car from Durban. Falaza borders the heritage-listed Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park and includes accommodation for thirty in fifteen luxury, twin-bedded tents.

  • Elephant Back Safaris have been introduced at the luxurious Nguni River Lodge in the Addo Elephant National Park. The Lodge is an hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth. 
  • A new, multipurpose venue including a conference centre has opened at Lalibela Game Reserve close to Port Elizabeth. It caters for one hundred and thirteen delegates in theatre style seats with space for an extra 26 seats. A boardroom on site can accommodate up to twenty four delegates.  Currently Lalibela has three lodges with sleeping capacity for a total of forty four people; a forty roomed hotel is in the offing. The boma restaurant (an outdoor dining and entertainment area) offers exotic African cuisine including ostrich, warthog, crocodile and mopane worms


  • A new hotel in the Relais Hotel stable has opened in Adderley Street in the Cape Town city centre. The boutique hotel comprises twenty eight suites.
  • TriAcitve Tented Lodge and Conference Centre recently opened at Elgin, less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town in the heart of apple country. Twelve twin bedded units are on offer and an Adventure Centre operating from the Lodge includes: guided mountain biking, nature walks, abseiling four adventure wine tours and the world’s first biodiversity wine route.
  • A new twenty seven suite luxury hotel and conference centre is currently under construction at Fish Hoek, 30 minutes from the Cape Town city centre, next to the beach.
  • A new versatile venue has opened at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town. Called Workshop 17 it features the conversion of an old maritime museum combined with the charm of a dockyard workshop and modern technical and staging support. It can seat six hundred people banquet style.
  • A multipurpose arena capable of seating 5,000 people (standing room for 7,000 people) has recently opened at the GrandWest Casino in Cape Town.


  • The multi award-winning, former sugar baron’s estate, Lynton Hall at Pennington, 40 minutes south of Durban has launched a new garden pavilion. It’s the ideal venue for conferences and events. It is capable of hosting forty people schoolroom style and up to one hundred and twenty people for events. Two new luxury suites have been added to the hotel bringing the total number of individually decorated suites on offer to eleven.
  • A new R460 million (US$63 million) state-of-the art indoor arena capable of accommodating audiences of up to 10, 000 has opened its doors at the internationally-acclaimed  ICC Durban (International Convention Centre Durban).
  • A conference centre with seating for thirty-two delegates has opened at Falaza Game Park and Spa outside Hluhluwe in Zululand. It’s a scenic three hours by car from Durban.   • Thula Thula Private Game Reserve in Zululand, 40 minutes from the town of Richard’s Bay and less than two hours by car from Durban, recently opened a conference centre that can accommodate forty delegates. The facility is 45 minutes from Umfolosi Game Reserve.
  • The Royal Palm Hotel in Durban is the latest hotel to open in the three Cities Hotel stable. A luxury apartment city hotel, it’s 20 minutes from Durban International Airport and close  to the coastal village of Umhlanga . The Royal Palm comprises ninety four luxury apartment suites and three floors of A grade office suites. It is directly opposite the Gateway Theatre of Shopping , the largest retail shopping complex in the Southern Hemisphere that also includes the 1 on 1 Events Centre.
  • Makarange Garden Lodge in the lush botanical surrounds of Kloof (a suburb of Durban) has added eight luxury rooms, two new conference centers and an extra boardroom.
  • Fordoun Hotel and Spa located at Nottingham Road in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands has introduced a “Power Break Corporate Package”  combining conferencing with spa treatments. It includes seminars on stress and coping, exercise, nutrition, bio energy balancing and pampering spa treatments.


  • Pestana Kruger Lodge recently opened a boma (outdoor dining area) located on the banks of the Crocodile River – ideal for groups of up to forty as a private dining venue. Their major conference centre can accommodate one hundred and fifty delegates


  • The new Montecasino Piazza at Sandton (Johannesburg) has opened. The 37 800 square metre extensions include a one hundred and seventy nine room hotel for business tourists, a 1,400 square metre Montecasino Ballroom which enhances the existing banqueting facilities providing a large enough venue to seat 400 people banquet style. It also includes a 1,900 seat theatre and six al fresco restaurants.

  • A new tented area has opened at Glenburn Lodge situated in the world heritage site of “The Cradle of Humankind” 30 minutes from Johannesburg, at the foot of the Swartkops Mountain. It can sleep up to sixty guests in ten tents.

  • Budmarsh Private Lodge in Magaliesberg (45 minutes by road from Johannesburg) has opened a second conferencing venue. It can accommodate up to twenty four people, the main conference room seats forty delegates. The Lodge is noted for its excellent cuisine. It has eighteen ensuite bedrooms.

  • Eden Manor, a new conference centre recently opened on the banks of the Vaal River, (an hour from Johannesburg). is located between Vanderbijlpark and Parys, on the perimeter of the Vredefort Dome, a world heritage site. The Manor has eight, luxury double rooms; the conference rooms can hold up to eighty people and the function hall one hundred and twenty.  Twenty kilometeres away, the new Nicky Price Golf Course, spanning two provinces, is currently under construction.

  • A new casino, the Silverstar Casino, is currently being constructed at Krugersdop (30 minutes west of Johannesburg). It is scheduled for completion December 2007 and will comprise three gaming venues, conferencing and banqueting facilities, restaurants, bars and entertainment and a health spa.

  • The SAB World of Beer Centre with its processing and history tour route, reception and conference facilities located in the heart of the Newtown Cultural Precinct in Johannesburg has reopened after a R20 million (US$2.7 million) refurbishment.

  • The Rezidor Hotel Group is to open a new hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg towards the end of next year. The Radisson Sandton will have two hundred and fifty six rooms and twenty seven suites plus eight conference centres.

  • Mabula Game Lodge, two hours north of Johannesburg, has added archery as a team building exercise.

  • A new luxury Roman-inspired guesthouse has been completed in Houghton, Johannesburg. The St Peters Place Boutique Hotel has seven en suite rooms and conference facilities for 15 people.
  • Kievits Kroon Country Estate and Spa at Kameedrfit Valley north of Pretoria has introduced a “Spouse on the House” programme   for its conference delegates. Conferences booked over weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) include full day conferencing, all meals, teas and accommodation for the delegate. In addition, the spouse is entitled to complementary, shared accommodation and use of the spa faculties (saunas, Jacuzzis, steam rooms, Swiss showers and plunge pools).


Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape

The city of Port Elizabeth is to get its own convention centre, the Nelson Mandela Bay International Convention Centre, a 1,000 seater convention and conference centre with a range of add-on facilities.  The Mandela Bay Development Agency is currently inspecting sites on which to construct the NMBCC.

Bloemfontein, The Free State

The first phase of the Bloemfontein International Convention Centre is expected to be completed by April 2008. The main arena is expected to accommodate 4,000 to
5,000 delegates.
